V-Steam : A crash lesson on a forgotten practice.

Updated: Aug 20, 2018

A few years ago, I sat in my living room and over heard a Talk show talking about Vagina steams. I literally almost choked over my breakfast. This caught me by surprise because this now "popular trend" was not new to me.

V-steam was an ancient tradition that my family and I practiced for years.

In fact, it was almost like a right of passage into womanhood. At an early age, we were educated about the benefits of caring for our most intimate part using herbs, oils, and steams. Steaming was also a special cleansing that was imperative after childbirth

The fact that this practiced was hitting mainstream media was amazing. However, I was also shock to find out that a lot of women did not know about this ancient tradition and practice. Being an advocate for holistic healing and a recipient of the benefits of V-steaming; I decided to put together this crash course in the benefits of steaming. I pray that it enlightens you and more women to become active in there womb care and to also tap into their Heritage.

Vaginal steaming also known as yoni steam, v-steam, bajos, or bain is an ancient womb treatment . Vaginal steam involves sitting or squatting over steamed water infused with herbs. This ancient practice provides a steam facial for the vagina to release toxins, promotes fertility, soothes menstrual cramps (resulting in a more pleasant menstruation(, and provide postpartum cleanse.

V-Steams are a Natural way to cleanse, heal and revitalize your uterus/ womb. The moist heat opens up the pores of the tissues releasing toxins and the herb infused water vapor provides the medicinal benefits directly to the pelvic tissue. Vaginal tissue is one of the most absorbent tissue in the female body which is why Steaming has been known to be successful in supporting womb care.

The known Benefits are:

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

  • Do not use if you have an IUD.

  • If you have genital piercings take them out prior to your steam.

  • 1 week before the 1st day of your Menstrual cycle, and I day after Menstrual bleeding has ended.

  • Steaming 2x a week is recommended for Hormonal imbalance such as PCOS, fibroids, Menopause, pelvic pain, or, endometriosis.

  • After a miscarriage it is recommended to wait 3 weeks prior to steaming.

  • For postpartum care, steaming can begin after bleeding has ceased and complete healing of C-section surgery. Steaming is great benefit to clearing our Lochia( the normal discharge from the uterus after childbirth ) in the womb.

It's recommended to steam until your herb water runs cool. This allows your tissue to absorb all the benefits of the herbs and steams. This also provides a relaxing cool down experience.

When you v-steam, you should expect a comforting, relaxing and soothing experience. During the steam you will feel a soothing warmth near your bottom half as well as warmth in you pelvic area. It is recommended to do controlled rhythm breathing and relax your body as much as possible. You should leave refreshed and reinvigorated.

Some women notice the relaxing affects of a v-steam with just one treatment. For more complicated issues such as hormonal imbalance, often a series of treatments is required. Herbal steam works to penetrate the uterus and expel any old tissues and blood during menstruation, you may notice some discharge following the steam or changes in your next cycle. This is a completely normal step to a steam cleanse.
